Joaquim Gonçalves

Joaquim Gonçalves ( born May 17, 1936 in Revelhe; † 31 December 2013, Póvoa de Varzim ) was Bishop of Vila Real.

Life

Joaquim Gonçalves, the third of eight children, studied 1948-1960 humanities, philosophy and theology in the seminary of the Archdiocese of Braga. He received on 10 July 1960, ordained priest in the chapel of the Seminary of Braga.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on August 3, 1981 for the Titular Bishop of Ursona and Auxiliary Bishop of Braga. The Archbishop of Braga, Eurico Dias Nogueira, donated to him on October 18, 1981 in the Basilica of Sameiro, Braga, a bishop; Co-consecrators were Júlio Tavares Rebimbas, Archbishop ad personam of Viana do Castelo, and António de Castro Monteiro Xavier, Archbishop ad personam of Lamego.

On 19 May 1987 he was appointed by John Paul II as Coadjutor Bishop of Vila Real. After the retirement António Cardoso Cunha, he followed him on 19 January 1991 after as a bishop. 17 May 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. its age-related resignation.

In the Portuguese Episcopal Conference, he was a member of the Episcopal Commission for Migration and Tourism, the Episcopal Commission for Liturgy and president of the Episcopal Commission for the Missions.
