Life

Joaquim Manuel de Macedo was born in 1820 in the city Itaboraí, a municipality in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. His parents were Severino de Carvalho Macedo and Benigna Catarina da Conceição. He completed his studies in medicine in 1844 and opened a practice in the hinterland of Rio de Janeiro. In the same year he published his novel A Moreninha. In 1849 he founded the magazine Guanabara, together with Manuel de Araújo Porto- alegre and Gonçalves Dias Antônio. In this magazine, large parts of his poem A nebulosa were published.

After his return to Rio, he gave up the profession of physician and became a teacher of history and geography at the Colégio Pedro II in the traditional capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro. He had close contacts with the Brazilian imperial family and was tutor of the children of Princess Isabel of Brazil. He also was a member of the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute ( IHGB ).

During his last years he had to struggle with mental suffering.

He was married to Maria Catarina de Abreu Sodré, a cousin of the poet Álvares de Azevedo. According to some historians have argued, it is the model for the main character of his novel A Moreninha.
