Joaquín Suárez

Joaquín Luis Miguel Suárez de Rondelo y Fernández ( born August 18, 1781 Canelones, † December 26, 1868 in Montevideo) was an Uruguayan politician.

Life

Suárez practiced in the course of his political career from various positions and offices, both during, as well as completion of the independence process in Uruguay. He worked together with Miguel Manuel Francisco Barreiro Bermúdez in the function of the governor of Montevideo as president of the provincial government first of 29 July 1815 to 20 January 1817. From December 1st to December 22 of the year 1828, he had then an interim basis held the office of Governor / Capitan General. He also belonged to the Constituent Assembly ( 1828-1830 ) to ( Asamblea Constituyente y Legislativa del Estado Oriental ).

During the period September 19, 1831 to November 7, 1831, the Partido Colorado nationals Suárez was then Foreign Minister of Uruguay. Finally, he took over during the civil war, the Guerra Grande, in the Gobierno de la Defensa ( Defense Government ) on an interim basis the presidency from 1 March 1843 to 15 February 1852.

In this term covers inter alia the resolution adopted on October 28, 1846 official abolition of slavery in Uruguay. On Suárez also the design of the Uruguayan flag dates back in its present form.

In montevideanischen Prado district is the Avenida Joaquín Suárez, in which the presidential residence is named after him. In his honor, also bear a town in the Uruguayan Department of Canelones and a facility located in the department of Colonia settlement its name.
