Joe Alves

Joseph "Joe" Manuel Alves ( born May 21, 1936 in San Leandro, California, United States) is an American art director.

Life

The son of Portuguese immigrants had be trained in film architecture at the California Institute Chinaurd mid 50s and then started his career as an animator assistant at the Walt Disney Studios. After years as a set designer for stage and television Alves succeeded in entering into the movie business.

He assisted in 1965 Hein Heckenroth in Alfred Hitchcock's thriller Torn Curtain DDR and could soon own design decor. Alves ' career received a major boost with the beginning of a brief but very successful collaboration with Hollywood damaligem ' prodigy ' Steven Spielberg. Above all, his designs to his sci-fi classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind deserve attention. For this performance he received an Oscar nomination as well as the British BAFTA Film Award in the category Best Art Direction. Since then, Alves sought his orders with great care. Particularly remarkable is its creation of a dark, decaying world of the future in John Carpenter's Escape from thriller.

Alves, who is also the decorations to the first two Jaws -digging - including the shark dummy - had designed, directed the third installment of the film series. In Carpenters science fiction movie Starman 1984 he worked as a visual consultant and as director of second unit teams.
