Joe Besser

Joe Besser (born 12 August 1907 in St. Louis, Missouri; † 1 March 1988) was an American comedian and voice actor. He became famous for his temporary involvement in the cult series The Three Stooges.

Life

Better was the ninth child of Jewish immigrants Morris and Fanny Besser, who had in 1895 emigrated from Poland to the United States. On November 18, 1932 married Joe Besser Erna Dora Kretschmer ( Erna Kay ), with whom he romantically involved until his death remained.

He acted up to its accession to the Three Stooges in 1956 as a solo comedian among other things, on Broadway in New York City.

In the spring of 1956 Joe Besser replaced the dead of a heart attack Shemp Howard as one of the three main characters in the Three Stooges. He was involved in numerous short films and thus achieved a greater awareness than before. As was discussed at the end of 1957, if the Three Stooges should start a tour with live performances, Better, announced its withdrawal from the program because he did not want to leave alone his wife Erna, who had suffered a heart attack in November 1957 for this purpose. He therefore left the Stooges in 1958 and started a successful television career. He also began working as a voice actor for various television programs.

Joe Besser died on 1 March 1988 of heart failure. He is buried in Glendale, California with his wife Erna († 1989) at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
