Joe Fonda

Joe Fonda ( born December 16, 1954 in Amsterdam / New York) is an American jazz bassist.

Life and work

Fonda, who comes from a family of musicians, first played guitar and studied in the early 1970s bass at the Berklee School of Music. Upon completion of training, he released his first album as a bandleader Looking for the Lake.

In the 1980s, he appeared in the region around New Haven and was ( 1982-85 ) as a bass player and dancer member of the Sonomama Dance Company. In 1983 he recorded the album Procession of the Great Ancestry with Wadada Leo Smith, whose Creative Musicians Improvisers Forum and Orchestra he belonged from 1979 to 1985.

From 1984 to 1999 Fonda was a member of various bands of Anthony Braxton. From 1994 to 1999 he served on the Board (since 1997 Chairman) of the Tri -Centric Foundation and member of the led by Braxton Tri -Centric Orchestra. Also at the premiere of Braxton's opera Shalla Fears for the Poor in 1996 in New York, he played the bass.

With Michael Jefry Stevens Fonda led the Fonda -Stevens Group, a quartet or quintet formation that extended to the dancer and the singer Brenda Bufolino Vicki Dodd Album From the Source recorded. He also led his own quintet, the quartet Conference Call ( with Han Bennink, Gebhard Ullmann and Michael Stevens) and joined in a duo with the guzheng player Xu Fengxia on. With Barry Altschul and Billy Bang, he founded the FAB Trio. In Germany Fonda plays with Patrick Bebelaar and Herbert Joos.

As a sideman, Fonda appeared inter alia with Archie Shepp, Ken McIntyre, Lou Donaldson, Bill and Kenny Barron, Perry Robinson, Dave Douglas, Curtis Fuller, Mark White Cage, Marion Brown and Bill Dixon.
