Joe Maini

Joe Maini ( born February 8, 1930 as Joseph Maini Jr. in Providence, Rhode Iceland, † May 7, 1964 ) was an American jazz saxophonist (alto saxophone, tenor saxophone) of modern jazz.

Maini comes from a musical family; both his father and his son playing Italian folk music. After he had lessons on the alto saxophone, he was a professional musician in 1947. Earlier in his career played Joe Maini 1948 Alvino Rey and with Johnny Bothwell, 1949 with Jimmy Zito and from 1950 with Claude Thornhill. From the mid- 1950s he worked as a freelance musician in Hollywood and made under other recordings with Kenny Drew, Terry Gibbs, Bill Holman, Jimmy Knepper / Charles Mingus, Red Mitchell, Jack Montrose, Jack Sheldon and accompanied the singers Lena Horne and June Christy. In 1955 he was a founding member of the formation Shelly Manne & His Men 1964, he served as first alto saxophonist with Louie Bellson and was also active in the bands of Gerald Wilson.
