Jōetsu, Niigata

Joetsu (Jap.上 越 市, -shi ) is a city in Niigata Prefecture in Japan.

History

The city was formed in 1971 by merging the cities and Naoetsu Takada. Naoetsu was the seat of government of the historical province of Echigo. The city was built around the 1614 Takada established by the daimyo Matsudaira Tadateru Takada Castle.

In 2005, the municipalities ( machi ) Yasuzuka, Kakizaki, Ogata, Yoshikawa, Itakura and Nadachi and the villages ( mura ) Uragawara, Ōshima, Maki, Kubiki, Nakago, Kiyosato and Sanwa were incorporated.
