Johan Jørgen Holst

Johan Jørgen Holst ( born November 29, 1937 in Oslo, † 13 January 1994 Nesodden ) was a Norwegian politician Arbeiderpartiet.

Holst visited the Oslo Katedralskole, one of the oldest and most prestigious schools of Norway, where in 1956 he graduated. After visiting a Russian Language School, he attended Columbia University, where in 1960 he received his bachelors degree. In 1965, he earned a master's degree in political science at the University of Oslo.

From 1981 to 1986, Holst Director of the Norsk Institutt Utenrikspolitisk ( NUPI, the Norwegian Institute for Foreign Policy). From 1986 to 1989 and from 1990 to 1993 he was the Norwegian Minister of Defence, from April 1993 until his death in 1994 as the successor Thorvald Stoltenberg's Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway. As Foreign Minister Holst played a leading role in the negotiations in the Oslo peace process between Israel and the Palestinians. In Gaza City, a park was named in his honor.

Holst's wife Marianne Heiberg was a sister of Karin Stoltenberg, so that Holst was a brother of his successor Thorvald Stoltenberg and uncle of the later Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.

In December 1993, Holst suffered a slight stroke from which he never recovered. His wife said later that he had worked himself to death in the peace process.
