Founder of the " new" political theology

Metz is considered the founder of himself what he called "new" political theology - to be viewed - in contrast to the "old " political theology of Carl Schmitt. This from the German left-wing Catholicism ( and Others Walter Dirks ) and the Frankfurt School -influenced new approach was in critical exchange with liberation theology in Latin America.

Metz is considered to be one of the most important and influential German theologian after the Second Vatican Council. It is a particular concern of Metz, the newly introduced "authority of the suffering " in theology or again to remember; the question of theodicy he sees as a permanent job to the church and theology, the " memoria passionis " to preserve and in this way contribute to the humanization of the world in openness on their eschatological consummation by God. Therefore, the theology of eschatological reservation must operate.
