Johann Florian Heller

Johann Florian Heller ( born May 4, 1813 in Jihlava, † November 21, 1871 in Vienna ) was an Austrian physician and chemist. He is now considered one of the founders of clinical chemistry.

Life

He was the eldest of 10 children of a pharmacist to the world and also wanted to take the pharmacist 's career. However, he studied medicine in Prague. While he practiced as a physician, he studied chemistry at even Adolf Martin Pleischl and concludes in 1837 with the dissertation Concerning the rhodizonic, a new oxidation state of the carbon and the crocodile acid, the salts of both. Since 1838, in Vienna, he directed from 1842 high personal use at the Vienna General Hospital, a pathological- chemical laboratory, where he conducted extensive urine and blood analysis to support the clinician. But did not succeed him, for his field of work to gain recognition and to provide a consolidated position in the hierarchy of professors. In 1850 he received a travel grant for the purpose of training. The study tour took him to Germany, Switzerland and France. In his comprehensive travel report to the k.k. Ministry of Culture, he describes the state of hospitals, universities, pharmacies and facilities and state of the science in the countries visited.

Performance

Heller is the pioneer of chemical urinalysis and was the first one the world today routinely carried out chemical and microscopic urinalysis in Austria. His urine examinations extended to density, protein, blood and sugar. He is now considered one of the founders of clinical chemistry.

1981 laid the Austrian post office on a special stamp by the portrait of Kriehuber.
