Johann Friedrich Doles

Johann Friedrich Doles ( born April 23 1715 in Steinbach- Hallenberg, † February 8, 1797 in Leipzig ) was a German composer and choirmaster.

Life

Johann Friedrich Doles was the son of the cantor Johann Andreas Doles and attended 1727-1733 school Schmalkalden and later the Henneberg school in Schleusingen. There he founded with classmates a " Weekly Concert", for which he also wrote compositions. 1739 to 1744 he studied theology in Leipzig and at the same time took lessons from Johann Sebastian Bach.

In 1744 he was cantor at Freiberg. From 1756 until his retirement in 1789 he was cantor of St. Thomas School and Music Director of the two main churches in Leipzig, since 1770 also university music director.

Dole's compositions are easily understandable and catchy in the diction and were very popular in his time. From the influence of his teacher stream they reveal little. He wrote 158 cantatas, motets and 35 more passions. In printing a collection of chorale preludes, a four-part chorale book, the cantata for foundation of the "Great Concert " appeared (from the Gewandhaus Orchestra was born) " The Praise of Music " as well as his setting of 21 odes of his friend the poet Christian Fürchtegott Gellert.

Johann Friedrich Doles died on 8 February 1797 in Leipzig.

Doles ' son Johann Friedrich was a lawyer and notary. He composed also.
