Johann Gerhard König

Johann Gerhard König (also written Koenig, born November 29, 1728 in Lemenen ( Ungerhof ), Livonia, † June 26, 1785 in Jagrenatporum, Andhra Pradesh, India) was a German botanist and physician. His botanical author abbreviation is " J.Koenig "; earlier was also the abbreviation " JGKoenig " in use.

King studied at the University of Copenhagen. He undertook research trips in Southeast Asia; From 1773 he lived in India. King corresponded with Linnaeus.

At the work of Swedish botanist Anders Observationes Botanicae Jahan Retzius he worked with ( Fasc. 3, 1783 and Fasc. 6, 1791). King described many plants used in Ayurveda.

The plant genus Koenigia L. of the family buckwheat family ( Polygonaceae ) has been named in his honor. Similarly, the epithet of Bergera koenigii was named after him.
