Johann Heinrich Kaltenbach

Johann Heinrich Kaltenbach ( born October 30, 1807 in Cologne, † May 20, 1876 in Aachen ) was a German botanist and entomologist. His botanical author abbreviation is " Kaltenb. ".

Life and work

After his school days in Cologne and subsequent training to elementary teachers at teacher training college in Brühl, Kaltenbach occurred in 1815 during his first teaching job in the place Hastenrath in Eschweiler, but changed two years later in an upscale elementary school in Aachen. In 1837 he was appointed the Acting Director Johann Joseph Kribben to the former grammar school, which later became junior high school first -order and the present Rhine-Meuse -Gymnasium Aachen, where he taught until his death in 1876.

In addition to his dutiful subjects Kaltenbach prescribed increasingly the natural sciences and an intern in the field of botany at Philipp Wirtgen and in the field of entomology at Arnold Foerster. Soon was Kaltenbach as one of many pioneers of the "applied entomology ". As a result, he first joined the " Society for useful sciences " in Aachen in and also the " Entomological Club Stettin ", the Zoological and Botanical Society of Vienna and the Natural History Association of the Rhineland and Westphalia.

Results of his research, he wrote down in several major publications for its time, with the knowledge of native species played a special role for him. Alone in his publication "Flora of the Aachen basin " he described more than 800 phanerograms ( seed plants ). However, his major work was declared the manual on "The plant enemies from the class of insects ." Much of his botanical researches and works were recording in the archives of the botanist Carl Friedrich von Ledebour. His botanical abbreviation was " cold. " But also " Kaltenb. ".

As part of its education service, it Kaltenbach was a particular concern, to let his scientific research across disciplines included in the teaching content of the Earth and History. So he began by a guide on " nature- lessons in geography " and this, wrote his highly acclaimed main work on the " Region of Aachen, a guide for teachers, travelers and lovers of History ," in which he not only to the origins, characteristics as well as the population and its main cities, towns, fortresses and castles came in, but also occupied himself intensively with climate, soil conditions, flora and fauna of this region.

For his life's work was Johann Heinrich Kaltenbach awarded first class a year before his death and during his 50 - year service anniversary with the Red Eagle.
