Johann Jakob Hottinger

Johann Jakob Hottinger ( born December 1, 1652 Zurich, † December 18, 1735 ) was a Reformed theologian and church historian from Switzerland.

Life

Johann Jakob Hottinger was the third son of the famous Swiss theologian and orientalist Johann Heinrich Hottinger. He studied theology in Zurich, Geneva and Basel, 1676, finally, he was ordained and entered the service of the Zurich church. In 1679 and 1680 he held the week sermons at St. Peter 's Church in Zurich. 1680 he took over the parish in Stallikon. In 1886 he returned to Zurich and became a deacon at Grossmünsterplatz. In 1698 he was appointed as the successor of the deceased in January this year Johann Heinrich Heidegger, professor of Old Testament Theology and Choir Lord at Zürcher Grossmünsterplatz.

He was all his life a prolific writer and has written over 100 publications. As part of his writing career, he was involved in the reformed Catholic polemic discussion of his time. He wrote, for example, his Helvetic church history as a reply to the Church History, Johann Kaspar Lang, a Catholic theologian from train, from 1692. Besides he also opposed the pietism, which among other things, the work of Temptation hour about the Protestant church, by new self lauff end prophets from 1717 testifies.
