Johann Ludwig Christian Gravenhorst

Johann Ludwig Christian Carl Gravenhorst (born 14 December 1777 Braunschweig, † January 14, 1857 in Breslau) was a German zoologist and professor.

Life and work

As the son of a wealthy Brunswick beer and vinegar brewer, he inherited his father's early fortune, which relieved him of all financial worries for the rest of his life.

The schooling at Katharineum and at the Collegium Carolinum in Brunswick learned Gravenhorst Johann Christian Ludwig Hellwig and August Wilhelm Knoch know who could inspire him early in biology.

From 1797 he studied law at the University of Helmstedt, but then changed the subject in 1799 and from then studied natural sciences with Johann Karl Wilhelm Illiger at the Georg- August-Universität Göttingen. 1801 doctorate Gravenhorst in Helmstedt with a thesis on entomology. In 1804 he completed his habilitation in Göttingen for natural history and zoology. In 1808 he became the A.O. Professor appointed.

In 1810 he went as a full professor of natural history at the alma mater Viadrina. When she was moved in 1811 after the Peace of Tilsit of Frankfurt (Oder ) to Wroclaw, he also moved the capital of the province of Silesia. By 1814 his important private collection of the Silesian Friedrich Wilhelm University in 1814 donated, he founded the Zoological Museum Wroclaw. 1828/29 he was rector of the university.

In Göttingen, he kept working with rove beetles ( Staphylinidae ), in Wroclaw with parasitic wasps ( Ichneumonidae ). Gravenhorst was known as descriptive of taxonomists. He is first described nearly 900 species of animals, such as the Sardinian Brook Newt. The abbreviation for his name in the author citation is " Gravenhorst ".
