Johann Zoffany

Johann Zoffany, also Zoffani or Johannes Josephus Zauffely RA ( born March 13, 1733 in Frankfurt am Main, † November 11, 1810 beach -on- the-Green, London) was a British painter of German origin.

Life

Johann Joseph Zoffany was born in Frankfurt / Main. He was the son of a product originating in Bohemia and working at the Prince of Thurn and Taxis in Frankfurt / Main court architect. When moving the yard in 1748 from Frankfurt to Regensburg, he came with his father to Regensburg; here he worked in the workshop of the painter Martin Regensburger spear in Brixen yard and married a from Regensburg. He was a pupil of Francesco Solimena and studied in Italy later.

1761 Zoffany went to London at age 27. There he was the protege of the famous actor David Garrick and painted mostly theater scenes. Garrick presented Zoffany, then King George III. before, of the orders issued to him to paint his family. Zoffany took on the shape of the conversation image and thereby gained the favor of the king, who him in 1769 for the Royal Academy of Art, which opened in the same year, nominated.

On December 19, 1763 Zoffany was a member of the Federation of the Freemasons ( The Old King's Lodge No. 28). In the 1770s, when the king took back a job to him, because he incorporated commoners in the painting, he moved to Italy. He lived most of Florence. In 1783 he moved to Calcutta and there was a great success. In 1789 he returned as a rich man back to London, but did not make it to his success to tie then.

Zoffany was the first painter who could portray the royal family in a relaxed atmosphere.
