Johannes Christiaan Schotel

Johannes Christiaan Schotel ( born November 11, 1787 Dordrecht, † December 22, 1838 ) was a Dutch marine painter, etcher and lithographer.

Life

Together with his teacher Martinus Schouman he led two large pictures of the French withdrawal from Dordrecht in 1814 and the bombardment of Algiers by the Dutch and the English in 1816. But subsequently he developed especially in regard to the maritime nature of representation its own style. Typical are his depictions of storms and rough seas.

In the Cathedral Dordrecht him a monument was set in 1840.

His sons were Jacobus Schotel, who wrote a biography of his father, and Peter John Schotel, who was also active as a maritime painter.
