Life

Johannes Jacobus Smith was born in 1867 in Antwerp, Belgium and grew up in Amsterdam. At the suggestion of his teacher JC Costerus he trained as a gardener at the nursery Groenewegen. She also held positions a year in the Kew Gardens in London, and two years in Brussels, first in the orchid nursery Linden, then in the botanical garden.

Again Costerus it was that Smith proposed to be employed in the East Indies. He was there from 1891 in charge of a coffee plantation, but was more interested in the species-rich forest in the area and soon accepted an invitation to Melchior Treubs to go to the botanical garden Buitenzorg. There he advanced from assistant curator to the employee and later director of the herbarium, and finally from 1922 to the director of the botanical garden. During his career, he undertook numerous field studies and travels in the Indonesian archipelago. He published especially for the orchid flora and got 1910 honorary doctorate for his scientific accomplishments of the University of Utrecht. After his retirement due to illness and return to the Netherlands he kept in close contact with the herbaria in Utrecht and Leiden, numerous writings from this period. His greenhouse was home to numerous tropical orchids, but the collection was lost in World War II due to lack of fuel. Smith died in 1947 at the age of eighty years.
