Gottfried Wilhelm Johannes Mildbraed ( born December 19, 1879 in Jahnsfelde (Mark Brandenburg), † December 24, 1954 in Berlin) was a German botanist, who specialized with mosses, ferns and seed plants on special. He is known as author of a monograph and taxonomic treatment of Stylidiaceae family from 1908. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Mildbr. ".

Life and work

John Mildbraed came in 1879 in the family of Robert and Elizabeth Lenz Mildbraed to the world. He went first in Jahnsfelde and then later in the episode directly in Muencheberg to school. In 1897 he graduated from high school in Charlottenburg and studied linguistics at the University of Berlin. But he soon moved on to the Faculty of Science. Mildbraed in 1904 received his doctorate of philosophy. His forthcoming to defend thesis concerned the plant family of Podostemaceae. Since 1903 he worked as an assistant to Adolf Engler in the Berlin Botanical Museum.

In 1907 broke Mildbraed and his companions on his first research expedition into the territory of the Central Rift Valley. This research trip was headed by Adolf Friedrich of Mecklenburg. The path led them through a little-known area that lay to the east of Lake Kivu. The second German Central Africa Expedition, which was also attended Mildbraed was made ​​between the years 1910 and 1911 to explore the region of the Upper Nile. During the third expedition, in 1914, ie while it First World War, was captured by French troops Johannes Mildbraed and deported to France. He returned in 1919 to return to Germany. It was only on September 17, 1928 Mildbraed traveled again to Africa, this time mainly in the region around Cameroon.

In 1913 he was curator of the Berlin Botanical Garden. In addition to his research and teaching activities, he also held other academic Diszipline and a wider, interested social class lectures or organized tours of the Botanical Garden in Berlin. In 1920 he married; the couple had three children.

On March 1, 1943 during the Second World War, a large part of the Botanical Garden Berlin collections were destroyed in the bombing of Berlin. Below were also many collectors' pieces of Mildbraed.
