Johannes Rietstap

Johannes Baptista Rietstap ( born May 12, 1828 in Rotterdam, † December 24, 1891 in The Hague) was a Dutch typist in Parliament, Herald and genealogist.

Life

Rietstap was the son of William Henry Rietstap, the accountant and insurance agent and his wife Elizabeth Hermina Remmert. In November 1850 he took a job in the organization of shorthand. In 1857 he married Johanna Maria de Haas. The marriage remained childless. His first armorial he was already out in 1861. It contained about 50,000 coats of arms. 1871/72 he saw the time had come to issue its own magazine as heraldic Journal. Title was " magazine for Heraldry, Genealogy, seals and medals". The output was set in 1882. Here he saw his task to make the heraldry and genealogy for anyone to understand. In the 1880s, he documented the Dutch nobility in genealogy and coats of arms, which led to book editions. His coat of arms authored books included between 116000-120000 crest. In the early 1870s he also worked as a translator of books, particularly fiction. Here his language skills in English, French, German, Latin and Spanish later he benefited. In 1887, he took for three and a half years again a position as a typist at. He then went into retirement.
