John Anderson, Jr.

John Anderson Jr. ( born May 8, 1917 in Olathe, Kansas ) is a retired American politician. He was 1961-1965 the 36th Governor of the state of Kansas.

Early years

Anderson attended until 1935 Olathe High School, Kansas State University and the University of Kansas. There he completed his law degree in 1943. Due to health problems he was out of the question for military service during the Second World War. Instead, he worked on the staff of Federal Judge Walter A. Huxman. In 1946 he opened a private law firm in Olathe. His political rise began in 1947. In that year he was elected district attorney of Johnson County. This office he held for six years before he was a member of the State senate 1953-1956. Between 1956 and 1961 he was Minister of Justice ( Attorney General ) of Kansas. In 1960 he was nominated by his party as a candidate for the Republican gubernatorial elections and subsequently elected by the voters of Kansas against the incumbent George Docking in this office.

Governor of Kansas

On January 9, 1961 John Anderson was introduced to his new office. After a re-election in 1962, he could officiate as governor until January 11, 1965 a total of four years. During this time the pardon system in Kansas has been reformed. In the field of health care, a combined hospital that was both ordinary patients and the mentally handicapped was open. At that time, the school system was reorganized and re-scaled the school districts. The welfare system has been improved and the motorway expansion ahead. Even the pension system of the civil service underwent an improvement. Finally, the administration itself has been reorganized. Anderson was also the first governor of Kansas, who could inhabit the new governor building with the name " Cedar Crest ". In 1964, he opted not to run again.

After the end of his term in 1965, Anderson was again attorney in Olathe. At the same time he worked as a lawyer for the Highway Administration. He was also from 1965 to 1972 director of the Citizens Assembly ( Citizens Conference) of Kansas. In 1972 he applied again by his party's nomination for the office of governor, but was already stuck in the primaries. Anderson has also been nominated several times for judgeships in federal courts, but not appointed. Meanwhile, John Anderson has retired to Olathe. There, now over 90 -year-old ex-governor lives in retirement.
