John Burnheim

John Burn Home (* 1928 in Sydney, Australia) is an Australian philosopher. He was professor of philosophy at the University of Sydney and rector of the local St. John 's College.

Life

John Burn home comes from a Catholic family of Irish origin. He attended from 1943, the Catholic seminary in Sydney. With a scholarship from the church, he studied in Ireland, where he made his master earned a doctorate at the Catholic University of Leuven.

After his return from Europe, he became a professor of philosophy at the Catholic St. Columba 's Seminary in Springwood. After leaving the church, he was a lecturer in philosophy and from 1974 Professor of Philosophy, University of Sidney. He married and had two daughters. In 1990 he took early retirement.

Work

In his book " What is democracy? " (1987 ) used the term John Burn Home demarchy to describe a political system which knows no sovereign state or bureaucracies, but instead of decision-makers is conducted, which will be randomly selected decision. Thus it comes to democracy ideas of classical antiquity very close, as she described, for example, Thucydides. In 2006 Burn Home published a second English edition of his book with a new preface.

In his book "To Reason Why: From Religion to Philosophy and Beyond" he sets out in detail the reasons that moved him to resign from the church.
