John Chen Shizhong

John Chen Shizhong (Chinese陈 适中, Pinyin Chén Shizhong Chen W.-G. Shih -chung ) ( born December 26, 1916 in the Republic of China, † December 16, 2012 in Yibin, Sichuan Province, People's Republic of China) was Roman Catholic bishop of Yibin ( diocese Suifu叙 府).

Life

John Chen Shizhong occurred in 1930 in the Minor Seminary and in 1937 in the Great Seminary Annunciation one. After studying philosophy and theology, he received the priesthood in 1947. He worked for several years as chaplain and pastor, but was arrested after the takeover by the Communists. He spent the 1950s in a labor camp. He was released for a short time, but with the Cultural Revolution, he was imprisoned again from 1966 to 1976. After release from prison, he had to work in agriculture.

Not until 1981 that he was able to resume his priestly ministry again. In 1983 he was involved in the establishment of a seminary in Chengdu. On 14 June 1985 he was appointed by the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association for the eighth bishop of Yibin. Pope John Paul II endorsed the appointment later. In 1988 he became rector of the seminary in Yibin. Only in 2011 it was placed on the side with Peter Luo Xuegang a coadjutor. Chen was involved mainly in the pastoral care of vocations and priestly formation.
