John Clark (governor)

John Clark ( born February 1, 1761 New Castle County, Delaware; † August 14, 1821 ) was an American politician and 1817-1820 Governor of the State of Delaware.

Early years and political rise

Clarks schooling was rather modest. But he has this disadvantage offset by their own efforts, by learning on their own from books. John Clark worked for a year as a sheriff in New Castle County. Between 1794-1799 he was Minister of Finance of Delaware, and in 1798 he was elected to the House of Representatives from Delaware. Since 1805 he also served as a justice of the peace. From October 1807 to April 1808 he served as regimental colonel in the militia of his state. Clark was a member of the Federalist Party, as their candidate, he was elected on October 1, 1816 Governor.

Governor of Delaware and other CV

John Clark began his three -year term on 21 January 1817. His reign was uneventful. The governor supported reform for quick and easier handling of smaller debts. At that time a society was founded for the promotion of American manufacturers ( Society of the State of Delaware for the promotion of American Manufactures ) in Delaware. According to the then applicable state constitution Clark was not allowed to run again in 1819. Therefore, he resigned from his post on 15 January 1820.

After he retired from politics and became president of the Commercial Bank of Smyrna. However, he died in August 1821. He was with Sarah Cook Corbit, a widowed daughter of the former President of Delaware, John Cook, married. The couple had several children, of which only the 1814 deceased daughter Mary, however, is known by name.
