John Critchinson

John William Frank Critchinson (born 24 December 1934 in East London ) is a British jazz pianist and composer.

Life and work

John Critchinson worked in the early 1950s his main occupation as an electrician; as a part-time musician played among others with Ronnie Scott, Tubby Hayes, Major Holley and Jimmy Deuchar in the jazz club The Icebox in Chippenham. As semiprofessineller musicians he worked in the area of Bath, including two years in the Bristol Avon Cities Jazz Band, then moved to Bridport (Dorset ), and finally to Torquay, where he toured with own quartet at the Imperial Hotel. Only in the mid 70s he became a professional musician; he played in 1978 on the recommendation of his mentor Bill Le Sage at Ronnie Scott's quartet and he owned until 1995. During this time he also played with gas- animal border in England musicians such as Chet Baker, George Coleman, James Moody, Joe Henderson and Johnny Griffin. In the early 1980s he worked with the British fusion band Morrissey - Mullen ( with Dick Morrissey, Martin Drew and Jim Mullen ) and worked on two of her albums. In 1990 he played with Ronnie Scott's album Never Pat a Burning Dog and in the band of Bobby Wellins. In 1995 he founded with a kind of theme quartet, which also belonged to the bassist Dave Green and drummer Dave Barry. After Ronnie Scott's death in 1996 was the formation Critchinson Ronnie Scott Legacy with Pat Crumly (CD Ronnie Remembered ), which consisted of three years and toured the UK and New Zealand. In 2002 he formed a new band, with which he has performed at Ronnie Scott 's Club and the album With A Song In My Heart grossed. During this time, a solo piano album ( Where's the tune, Johnny? ) Originated with a program of lesser-known jazz standards.
