John David Merwin

John David Merwin ( born September 26, 1921 in Frederiksted on St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, † March 17, 2013 in Ohio ) was an American politician. Between 1958 and 1961 he was governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Career

John Mervin studied at the University of Puerto Rico, and Yale University. Later he opened the Virgin Islands as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. He became a deputy in the State House of Representatives, where he campaigned among other things, an extensive tax exemption or tax relief companies. On December 23, 1957, he was Secretary of State of its territory. On August 4, 1958 Merwin was proposed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to the local new governor and introduced after the approval of Congress on September 25 in his new office. In this role he took over from Walter A. Gordon. In its lasting until April 5, 1961 tenure, he promoted the tourism and planning a second airport on the island of Saint Thomas. This plan was abandoned by his successor again. After the end of his governorship John Merwin is no longer politically have appeared.

Merwin died age of 91 on March 17, 2013 at his home in the U.S. state of Ohio.
