John Elliott (Georgia)

John Elliott ( born October 24, 1773 in St. John 's Parish, Georgia; † August 9, 1827 in Sunbury, Georgia ) was an American politician ( Democratic- Republican), who represented the state of Georgia in the U.S. Senate.

Born in what is now Liberty County John Elliott first attended the preparatory to the study school, then moved on Yale College and received his degree there in 1794. After successfully studying law he was admitted to the bar and began to practice as a lawyer in 1797 in Sunbury. In this city he has also held a number of public offices.

In federal politics Elliott then moved in 1818 when he was elected to the U.S. Senate. He took his seat in Washington from March 4, 1819 true and completed a full term of office until March 3, 1825; during this time his party disintegrated into several factions, said he to the followers of William Harris Crawford, called the Crawford Republicans counted. He then returned to his native Georgia, where he died in August 1827.
