John Elya

John Adel Elya BS ( born September 16, 1928 in Maghduscha, Lebanon ) until 2004 Melkite Bishop of Newton (USA).

Life

After joining the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer Basilian John Adel Elya laid in 1949 from his religious vows. He studied philosophy and theology and was ordained priest on 17 February 1952. As a priest he was in Jordan, Manchester (New Hampshire), Toronto ( Canada) and Lawrence ( Massachusetts) worked. He then became rector of the Church Melkite Cathedral in Roslindale (Massachusetts ). While working as a priest, he earned his master's degree in theology at Boston College. At the Pontifical Gregorian University, he earned his doctorate in theology. After that, he taught moral theology and philosophy at the monastery of the Holy Savior in Lebanon. He later took over the post of rector at the seminary of St. Basil in Methuen (Massachusetts ).

1977 Elya was appointed Archimandrite. This was followed on 21 March 1986, the Suffragan bishop in Newton under the simultaneous appointment as Titular Bishop of Abila Lysaniae. On June 29, 1986, he was ordained by Archbishop Maximos V Hakim, Patriarch of Antioch, bishop. It assisted as co-consecrators Joseph Elias Tawil ( Archbishop Emeritus of Newton ) and Michel Hakim BS ( Apostolic Exarch Emeritus of Canada). He followed on 25 November 1993 his predecessor Ignatius Ghattas in the ministry of the Bishop of Newton. For his 50th anniversary as a priest, he was able to receive the personal congratulations of Pope John Paul II. He was the national Prior of the Patriarchal Order of the Holy Cross to Jerusalem in the United States.

During his tenure, he was Mitkonsekrator Ibrahim Michael BS ( Bishop of Montréal), on 22 June 2004 he retired and handed over his office to his successor Cyrille Salim Bustros.
