John Erskine, 22nd Earl of Mar

John Erskine (* 1675, † in May 1732 in Aachen (French Aix -la -Chapelle ) ), 23 Earl of Mar, 11th Lord Erskine, de jure 6th Earl of Mar, was a Scottish nobleman and military leader in the first Jacobite rebellion.

Life

His father was Charles Erskine, 22nd Earl of Mar, and his mother was Mary Maule, daughter of George Maule, 2nd Earl of Panmure.

With his father's death on 23 May 1689 took over the Title 23 Earl of Mar ( first award ) and 11th Lord Erskine. These titles were taken from him in 1716. Posthumously, he was awarded the title of Earl of Mar 23, together with the awarding of the title of 6th Earl of Mar (seventh award ) returned on 26 February 1875 by " House of Lords Privileges Committe ".

From 1702 as a Colonel of Infantry, a successful soldier, but fickle as a politician, he was appointed in 1697 the Privy Privy Council, that appeal was repeated in 1707. Between 1705 and 1709, and 1713-1714 he was Minister of Scotland ( " the Secretary of State for Scotland "); 1707-1713 additional " Representative Peer for Scotland ". In 1706 he was knighted in the Scottish Order of the Thistle.

1715 he joined the Jacobites under James, the Old Pretender, on September 6, he hoisted as a leader in Braemar the script of James for the first Jacobite rebellion. As the chief advisor to the Old Pretender, he served him, among others, as commanding officer at the battle of Sheriffmuir. The whole thing, however, no match, he had to go into exile on February 4, 1716, together with James. Outlaw, confiscated all possessions and all forfeited his title, he held James to 1724 loyalty. But with a lot of Jacobite, and thus worthless title of nobility honored ( 1st Earl of Kildrummie, 1st Marquess of Erskine, 1st Duke of Mar, 1st Lord of Alloa, Ferriton and Forest and 1st Viscount Gairloch on 22 October 1715, Knight of the Garter in 1716, 1st Earl of Mar on 10 November 1717 and 1st Duke of Mar on 13 December 1722), he spent his last years in Paris and Aachen, where he died in May 1732.

He was married twice. The first marriage in 1703 to Margaret Hay, daughter of Thomas Hay, 7th Earl of Kinnoull concluded from this marriage was born Thomas ( later Lord Erskine ). From his second marriage from 1714 with Frances Pierrepont, daughter of Evelyn Pierrepont, 1st Duke of Kingston -upon -Hull comes a daughter, Frances.
