John F. Kennedy School, Berlin

The John F. Kennedy School (short: JFK, John F. Kennedy School English ) is a true community school - ( Elementary, Secondary, Upper Secondary School ) in Berlin's Steglitz- Zehlendorf.

History

Originally founded on 11 October 1960 in the premises of the Mühlenau School in Berlin -Dahlem as the German - American Community School, was the bilingual ( German -American ) comprehensive school in 1963 after the assassination of the 35th U.S. president John F. - Kennedy School renamed and moved in the same year to the Teltowerdamm in Zehlendorf, first in temporary spaces. A new building was inaugurated in 1970 and more new buildings on the school grounds followed in later years (architect: Harald Deilmann ).

After the reunification of Germany in 1990 and the withdrawal of Allied troops the objectives of JFK, who had previously focused heavily on the reconciliation after the Second World War, were redefined.

The open day school serves as a model for bilingual schools in Europe.

At the JFK is taught in German and English; it is considered a " school special educational characteristics". There you can purchase both the general university ( German Abitur ) and the American High School Diploma.

Facilities and student body

The school is located in a modern campus spread over 6 main buildings and has 135 classrooms, nine science labs, three computer labs, two libraries, two sports halls, and a growing extension for the Arts.

The majority of the more than 1700 students (57%) are German; one-third are Americans, and the rest comes from a variety of other countries. The John F. Kennedy School employs 142 teachers in full-time and 32 part-time. 91 Of the 174 faculty members are German, 78 American and 5 from other countries ( 2009).
