John Fallon (footballer)

John Fallon ( born August 16, 1940 in Blantyre ) is a former Scottish goalkeeper of Celtic Glasgow and a member of the Lisbon Lions, the 1967 Legend were.

Fallon has already played in the youth teams of Celtic and was built as a successor of the eccentric goalkeeper Frank Haffey. Fallon graduated in 1959 in the first team of Celtic his first game for the full distance and eventually replaced in 1963 Haffey entirely.

However, he lost his place in 1964, despite a successful season in the continental competitions to the experienced Ronnie Simpson.

During the following years he not managed to get past Simpson and only sometimes played against supposedly weaker opponents. In interviews, he declared that it was nerve-racking for him to look at the game as a substitute from the bench as if he would actually be used.

In the final of the European Champions' Cup in 1967 in Lisbon between Celtic and Inter Milan Fallon sat during the game as the only substitute ( Substitutions were allowed only on the goalkeeper position) on the bench. He is thus the only one of Lisbon Lions, who did not participate on the game, so he is not counted by some people to the Lisbon Lions.

After the triumph in the European Cup Celtic played in the same year, the World Cup final, which was contested in a round- a return match against Racing Club Avellaneda. When Ronnie Simpson, the goalkeeper, was warming up for the second half of the first leg, he was injured by a thrown object of the spectators, so that he could not continue playing. Fallon stepped in and completed the second half of the incoherent part and also the still zerfahrenere leg. Although Celtic lost both games, Fallon could be distinguished by some parades, whereupon the commentator got carried to the following comment: " If that's the goalkeeper as well like the other guy only then be?"

After Ronnie Simpson had ended his career, was Fallon Celtics goalkeeper, but lost this place to Evan Williams and also sat in the final of the European Cup of Champions in 1970 only on the bench.

He moved in 1972 to FC Motherwell and later to Greenock Morton, but ended shortly after this transfer his active career.
