John Farmer (1835–1901)

John Farmer ( born August 16, 1835 in Nottingham, † July 17, 1901 in Oxford ) was an English musician, composer and music teacher. He studied music in Leipzig and Coburg.

John Farmer worked from 1853 to 1857 in his father's business before he went to Zurich in order to seek his living as a music teacher. Back in England he was from 1864 to 1885 the faculty of the prestigious Harrow School. Afterwards he worked until his death as an organist for the Balliol College, Oxford.

John Farmer was going on in England as a champion of the music of Bach and Brahms forth. In his own works he left oratorios and other sacred music and the fairy tale ( opera ) "Cinderella"; He also composed numerous school songs, including the famous song of Harrow School "Forty Years On ".
