John Fernström

John Fernström (December 6, 1897 in Yichang, Hubei Province, China; † 19 October 1961, in Lund, Sweden) was a Swedish composer and conductor.

He grew up in Yichang in China, where his father ran a mission. In 1907 he moved with his family to Sweden, where he studied violin in Malmö. Fernström played from 1916 to 1932 violin in Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, which he conducted later. Together with Max Schlüter he studied in Copenhagen Violin and 1923-1932 also composition. From 1930 he studied conducting in Sondershausen

In 1948 he became director of the Conservatoire Lunder and led it until his death in 1961.

Besides the music itself Fernström was interested in painting since childhood and joined this interest partly with his music studies.

Despite 12 symphonies, string quartets and several concertos for clarinet and bassoon, as well as two operas and numerous choral and vocal works, he is only a few music known among experts.
