John Francis O'Hara

John Francis Cardinal O'Hara, CSC ( born May 1, 1888 in Ann Arbor, USA; † August 20, 1960 in Philadelphia, USA) was Archbishop of Philadelphia.

Life

John Francis O'Hara studied at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and in Washington, DC Pennsylvania and the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology. In 1912 he joined the Congregation of the Holy Cross and received on 9 September 1916, the sacrament of Holy Orders. From 1917 to 1939 he taught at the University of Notre Dame and first performed the duties of the Spirituals, and later the Vice-Rector and Rector.

On December 11, 1939, he was named by Pope Pius XII. Titular Bishop of Mylasa and auxiliary bishop in the Military Ordinariate of the United States. He received his episcopal consecration Francis Cardinal Spellman on 15 January of the following year. Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Fort Wayne, John Francis Noll, and the Bishop of Indianapolis, Joseph Elmer Ritter.

On March 10, 1945, he was named by Pope Pius XII. Bishop of Buffalo. The inauguration took place on 8 May of the same year. On November 23, 1951, the appointment would come as Archbishop of Philadelphia. Pope John XXIII. took John Francis O'Hara on 15 December 1958 as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santi Andrea e Gregorio al Monte Celio in the College of Cardinals to. Two years later, died Cardinal O'Hara. He was buried in Sacred Heart Church of Notre Dame.
