John Frederick III, Duke of Saxony

Johann Friedrich III. the Younger ( * January 16, 1538 in Torgau, † October 31, 1565 in Jena ) was a Duke of Saxony from the Ernestine line of the Wettin family.

Life

Johann Friedrich was the fourth and youngest son of the Saxon Elector Johann Friedrich the Magnanimous (1503-1554) from his marriage with Sibyl (1512-1554), daughter of Duke Johann III. of Jülich -Cleves -Berg.

He was as a result of neglect in childhood always sickly and weak. Already facing adolescent theology, he went to study this science to Jena. Until 1557 standing under guardianship of his older brother, Johann Friedrich ruled alone from then on, but left for four years, the sole rule to his eldest brother. This agreement was extended in 1561 by another four years.

Johann Friedrich III. worked due to his personality often mediate on his brothers. He died at the age of 27, unmarried and childless. His grave is located in the town church in Weimar.
