John George Nicolay

John George Nicolay (* February 26, 1832 in Essingen (Pfalz ), † September 26, 1901 ) was private secretary and biographer of Abraham Lincoln.

He moved about 1838 with his father in the United States and in 1861 private secretary to the newly elected U.S. president Abraham Lincoln. A post he held until Lincoln's assassination in 1865. Together with John Hay, he published in 1890 the official biography of Lincoln. The work includes several books and has long been considered the most comprehensive source on Lincoln's life.

In 1881 he published a book on the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War. He also wrote the sections about it for The Cambridge Modern History.
