John Hall (priest)

John Robert Hall, FRSA (born 13 March 1949 in London ) is an English clergyman and Dean of Westminster.

Growing up in South London, he lived for a short time in Kenya. He studied theology at St Dunstan 's College, Catford, and at the University of Durham (St Chad's College) and taught for two years at a high school in Hull. He continued his studies at Cuddesdon Theological College.

He was ordained a priest in 1975 and served successively in communities in Kennington ( 1975-1978 ), Wimbledon ( 1978-1984 ) and Streatham in the Diocese of Southwark (1984 to 1992). He was from 1984 to 1992 member of the General Synod of the Church of England. From 1992 to 1998 he was Diocesan Director of Education and from 1994 to 1998 Resident canon in Blackburn.

In the period from 1998 to 2006 he was Secretary General of the National Society for the Promotion of religious education and from 1998 to 2002 Secretary of the board in educational matters of the Church of England. As Chief Education Officer of the Church of England, he acted von 2002 to 2006. He was from 2003 to 2006 honorary pastor of St. Alban South Norwood, Southwark.

On 19 September 2006, the Queen Elizabeth II announced that John Robert was appointed in Westminster Hall BA FRSA, after the resignation of the Reverend ( Arthur) Wesley Carr KCVO MA PhD, the 38th Dean of the Collegiate Church of St. Peter. He was inaugurated on December 2, 2006.

Canon Hall has written extensively on educational matters and was instrumental in the creation of the " Dearing Report" and its follow-up, which has led to a significant expansion of the church secondary schools in the UK was carried out. He was at various times governor of ten schools, two universities and a member of two local educational institutions.

As Dean of Westminster he is the Chief of the Bureau of Westminster School.

He is a member of the Royal Art Society ( Royal Society of Arts) and was appointed by Roehampton University awarded an honorary doctorate in 2007.
