John Henry Poynting

John Henry Poynting ( born September 9, 1852 in Monton near Manchester, † March 30, 1914 in Birmingham ) was an English physicist.

Poynting was the son of the Unitarian clergy T. Elford Poynting. He attended the Owen 's College in Manchester. In 1872 he received his Bachelor of Science degree. After that, he was at Trinity College, Cambridge; he graduated in 1876 with a Bachelor of Arts.

He married in 1880 Mary Adney, the Tochtes of the Unitarian clergy Rec J. Cropper.

Poynting was in Manchester 's assistant Balfour Stewart. From 1880 to 1914 he was professor of physics at Mason College in Birmingham.

As his instructor James Clerk Maxwell worked Poynting in the field of electrodynamics. He introduced the eponymous Poynting vector, also he dealt with the interaction of solar radiation with interplanetary dust ( Poynting - Robertson effect). The formulation of the set of Poynting is attributed to him.

Poynting in 1888 as a member ( "Fellow" ) was elected to the Royal Society, in 1905, the Royal Medal awarded him.
