John Herman Dent

John Herman Dent (born 10 March 1908 in Johnetta, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, † April 9, 1988 in Jeannette, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1958 and 1979 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Dent attended the public schools of his home and then the Great Lakes Naval Aviation Academy in Illinois. He also completed several correspondence courses. After that, he was 1923-1937 Member of the United Rubber Workers union. He was chairman of a local branch and member of the Management Board. He also was a member of the International Council of Trade Unions. From 1924 to 1928 he served in the squadron of the Marine Corps. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party. In 1932 to 1934 he sat in the council of Jeannette; 1934-1936 he was a deputy in the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. After that, he was from 1937 to 1958 to the State Senate; since 1939 he led there, the democratic faction. He also led the company at that time Kelden Coal & Coke Co. and Building & Transportation Co.

After the death of Mr Augustine B. Kelley Dent was in the overdue election for the 21 seats of Pennsylvania as his successor in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he took up his new mandate on 27 January 1958. After ten elections he could remain until January 3, 1979 at the Congress. In this time were, among others, the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement and the Watergate scandal.

In 1978, John Dent gave up another candidacy. He spent his life in Greensburg and died on 9 April 1988, in Jeannette.
