John Hewie

John Hewie ( born December 13, 1927 in Pretoria ) is a former Scottish football player and coach.

Career

Born as the son of Scottish parents in the Transvaal Hewie played in his youth for various South African clubs. In 1949 he went to Charlton Athletic, who had already brought several players from South Africa in the First Division. There he became the regular player and played until the end of his professional career in 1968 over 500 appearances for the club. Also in the Scottish national one was aware of him, so that he played 19 international matches from 1956 to 1960. He was a member of the squad at the World Cup 1958.

After end of his career he returned to South Africa and trained there different teams. In the 1990s he moved his retirement home to Britain.
