John Hilton the younger

John Hilton ( the Younger ) (* 1599 probably in Cambridge, † 1657 probably in Westminster ( London) ) was an English composer and musician.

Life and work

John Hilton was († 1608 ), probably born in 1599 as son of the father, John Hilton ( the Elder ) in Cambridge. His father was a countertenor and later with Thomas Butler organist at Trinity College, Cambridge. His compositional output includes mainly church music pieces.

John Hilton, the younger, studied at Trinity College in 1626 and received the degree of Bachelor of Music. He also appeared as a composer in appearance. His bequeathed work consists of church music and secular compositions.

1627 appeared the Ayres fa or la 's for three voices, the Hilton the first Professor of Music at the University of Oxford, William Heather devoted. These compositions are balletti in the style of Giovanni Giacomo Gastoldis and Thomas Morley and apply music history as the last compositions in the spirit of the madrigal.

His works also include the 1652 First published at the time and extremely popular compilation Catch did catch can (also known as Catch as catch can ), a collection of songs that appeared to 1762 in numerous editions.

From 1628 to the end of his life was Hilton organist and lay priest at St. Margaret 's Church in Westminster. Since 1635, he was also the lutenist of King Charles I..
