John Hunt, Baron Hunt of Tanworth

John Joseph Benedict Hunt, Baron Hunt of Tanworth, GCB, MC ( born October 23, 1919 in Minehead, † 17 July 2008) was a British politician and civil servant.

He attended Downside School and Magdalene College, Cambridge. In 1946, he joined the civil service and began his career in the Dominions Office. 1948 to 1950 he was Second Secretary to the United Kingdom High Commission in Ceylon. He was from 1973 to 1979 Cabinet Secretary.

Hunt was the holder of the Military Cross (MC). He was made a CB in the Order of the Bath, 1973 in the same Order to KCB in 1977 and eventually appointed GCB in 1968. On 8 February 1980 he became a life peer with the title " Baron Hunt of Tanworth, of Stratford -on-Avon in the County of Warwickshire " appointed. In the House of Lords he was sitting as Cross Bencher before a leave of absence was granted.

Hunt was in 1941 with Mary Magdalen Lister Robinson, daughter of the 1st Lord Robinson, married. After her death in 1971 he married in 1973 the widowed Madeleine Frances († 2007), a sister of Cardinal Basil Hume. Hunt had two sons.
