John Hunter (South Carolina politician)

John Hunter (* 1732 in South Carolina, † 1802) was an American politician ( Democratic- Republican), who represented the state of South Carolina in both chambers of Congress.

John Hunter was active after completing his education in the rural area near Newberry. 1786, he took his first political office, when he entered the House of Representatives of South Carolina, where he remained until 1792. This year, he was first a member of the Electoral College, the U.S. President George Washington unanimously confirmed in his office. Also in 1792 he was elected to the House of Representatives of the United States, where he remained on 4 March 1793 to 3 March 1795.

Following the resignation of U.S. Senator Pierce Butler Hunter took his place one in Congress. He sat from the December 8, 1796 in the Senate and then put in turn on November 26, 1798 from his office. As a result, he took care of his home plantation, before he died in 1802 and was buried in Newberry County.
