John I, Count of Waldeck

John I (* 1521, or 1522April 9, 1567 at Schloss Landau ) was Count of Waldeck and founder of the newer line Waldeck Landau. Because of his efforts to improve the evangelical doctrine in the country, he was also called " the Pious " or " Pius ".

Life

He was the second son of Count Philip III. from his second marriage with Anne of Cleves. Like his older brother Philip V, the cleric was, he studied from 1537 at the University of Marburg. However, as John turned down an ecclesiastical career, it came after the death of his father in 1539 to the division of an estate between Wolrad II from the first marriage of the father, thus founder of the middle line of Waldeck- Eisenberg was, and John, the founder of the newer line Waldeck Landau.

Johann took on the part of Protestants part at Smalcald war against Emperor Charles V and had to arrive together with other members of the house of Waldeck on November 26, 1547 in Augsburg. There they gave the name of the Emperor Antoine de Perrenot Granvelle, Bishop of Arras, a sharp rebuke. They had to make an apology on her knees, and her mother had to pay a considerable sum of money as punishment.

In 1553 Johann visited his uncle Franz von Waldeck, Bishop of Münster. This sent him with others in the city of Münster, to investigate a dispute between the city council and the guilds and fair as possible. After the Peace of Augsburg of 1555 Johann beat the other members of the Waldecker Graf house before a meeting of all ministers to improve the Evangelical Church being. The counts were represented at the meeting by their councils. Also in attendance were preachers from lip to work out with the aim for both gentlemen a uniform church order. At the Synod for the establishment of superintendents in every part of the country and of Kirchenvisitatoren was decided. After the first visitation of another synod was convened to discuss the results and prepare a church order. This was decided in 1557 and printed in Marburg for the first time.

In 1561, the Electorate of Cologne Drost of Volkmarsen, Jobst pity fell into the Johanns area. Johann asked the Landgrave Philip of Hesse for assistance.

Due to inheritance disputes, he lived with his mother Anna in strife. Through the mediation of Duke William of Jülich, Cleves and Berg and Landgrave Philip came in 1561 for a comparison. In 1561, Johann was built in Landau a new gate and a building firm. After the death of Bernhard of Lippe Johann VIII was one of the guardians of his children.

After his death he was buried in the parish church of Mengeringhausen. Remember him as an iron plate and a stone epitaph.

Marriage and issue

Johann married Anna 1550 zur Lippe, daughter of Simon V. to the lip. The marriage gave the world:
