John I. Thornycroft & Company

John I. Thornycroft & Company Limited, usually just called Thornycroft was a British shipbuilding company that was founded by John Isaac Thornycroft in the 19th century.

History

The 16 -year-old Thornycroft began in 1859, with the support of his younger sister, with the construction of its first small steam launch in his father's backyard in Chiswick on the Thames. In 1864 he returned from training as an engineer in Glasgow and began the construction of additional steam launches.

With the commercial shipbuilding began in 1866 on his own shipyard in Church Wharf, Chiswick. Here he constructed a 1873 type ship, which later became the torpedo boat was built, the rap for Norway. 1877 was followed by the HMS Lightning for the Royal Navy. 1898 was the Division torpedo boat SMS D 10 for the German Imperial Navy from the deck.

In June 1904, the company decided to move after Woolston in Hampshire, where it took over the shipyard of Mordey, Carney & Company. The original shipyard in Chiswick was closed in August 1909. The first ship, the Thornycroft built at the shipyard in Woolston for the Royal Navy, was a destroyer of the first Tribal - class, HMS Tartar.

1966 Thornycroft closed with Vosper & Co. in Portsmouth at Solent Vosper Thornycroft to together. The former Vosper shipyard was famous for its boat building, while Thornycroft was for the construction of destroyers and other bigger ships.

On 1 July 1977, the shipyard group was incorporated in the State British Shipbuilders Corporation. After a management buy -out in 1985 was the re-privatization under the old name. Vosper Thornycroft Since 2002, operates under the name VT Group.
