John III, Duke of Mecklenburg-Stargard

John III, Duke of Mecklenburg [- Stargard ]. (* 1389, † by November 11, 1438 ) was from 1416 to 1438, Duke of Mecklenburg, Lord of Stargard, Sternberg, Friedland, Furstenberg and Lychen. He was also known as John the Elder to distinguish to John V of Mecklenburg.

Family

He was the eldest child of the marriage of Duke John II and his wife Katharine ( Wilheida ).

Biography

Johann III. was probably born in 1389 and in 1416 took over the rule of Sternberg from his father. He fell for unknown reason in Brandenburg captivity from which he was released on June 28, 1427 under the oath of fealty. In 1436 he inherited along with his cousin Henry of Mecklenburg - Stargard and the Duke of Mecklenburg -Schwerin, Henry IV, the rule Werle. He married Luttrud, daughter of Albrecht IV of Anhalt- Köthen. She was probably a sister of Anna, the first wife of William, the last Prince of Werle ( Wenden). The marriage remained childless, well, at least inherited his cousin Henry of Mecklenburg [- Stagard ] the country. Duke Johann III. was probably buried in Sternberg.
