John Joseph Nevins

John Joseph Nevins ( born January 19, 1932 in New Rochelle, United States) is a retired bishop of Venice.

Life

John Joseph Nevins studied for his schooling at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology and social work at Tulane University in New Orleans. The sacrament of Holy Orders he received on 6 June 1959. Subsequently, he worked for twenty years as a pastor in various parishes of the Archdiocese of Miami.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on 25 January 1979, Titular Bishop of Rusticiana and auxiliary bishop in Miami. He received his episcopal consecration of the Archbishop of Miami, Edward Anthony McCarthy, on 24 March of the same year. Co-consecrators were René Henry Gracida, Bishop of Pensacola - Tallahassee, and John Joseph Fitzpatrick, Bishop of Brownsville.

On July 17, 1984 Nevins was appointed the first bishop of the newly established Diocese of Venice. He was inaugurated on 25 October 1984 by Pro- Nuncio to the United States, Archbishop Pio Laghi. Bishop Nevins was responsible for the Christian-Jewish dialogue in the U.S. Bishops' Conference.
