John Jukes

John Peter Jukes OFM Conv ( born August 7, 1923 in London, England; † 21 November 2011) was a British clergyman and religious Roman Catholic theologian. From 1980 to 1998 he was auxiliary bishop in Southwark.

Life

John Peter Jukes was the oldest of three children of Francis and Florence Jukes. His mother was a convert to Catholicism from the Anglican faith before the wedding. He attended primary school in Eltham and then the St. Joseph 's Academy in Blackheath. During the Second World War he was active in public service. Then he began a study of Agricultural Sciences ( in Romney Marsh ), but decided in 1946 to and entered the Congregation of the Friars Minor in Liverpool at.

Jukes first studied in England, graduated in theology (Diploma and Licentiate ) at the Pontifical Theological Faculty of St. Bonaventure Seraphicum in Rome and received on 19 June 1952 Archbishop Richard Downey in St. Anthony of Padua, Liverpool, the Priesterweihe.1953 to 1959 he was rector of the convent's Seminary in Anglesey, Wales. In 1959 he became pastor of St. Clare's in Higher Blackley, Manchester. In 1960 he became Secretary and Vice - Provincial of his Province of the Order. In 1968 he moved to Waterloo, Lancashire. From 1969 to 1979 he taught canon law at the Franciscan International Study Centre in Canterbury and was also active in various religious offices. In 1979 he was elected as Provincial of the English Minoritenprovinz.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on 20 December 1979 as Titular Bishop of Strathernia and appointed him as Auxiliary Bishop of Southwark. The Archbishop of Southwark, Michael George Bowen, gave him on 30 January 1980, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were Anthony Joseph Emery, Bishop of Portsmouth, and Charles Joseph Henderson, Auxiliary Bishop of Southwark.

Work

John Peter Jukes was committed to the school board and was its chairman for six years, and the Catechism. He was chairman of the " World of Work Committee of the Bishops ' Conference of England and Wales " and was committed to the "South London Industrial Mission." From 1993 to 1998 he was Chairman of the Governors of St. Mary's College of Higher Education, Strawberry Hill, Twickenham. He acted as representatives of the Bishops' Conference in the Christian Council for Defense and Disarmament. He was also a member of the Bioethics Commission of the three Bishops' Conferences of the British Isles. For his work, he was honored with an honorary doctorate from the University of Surrey. John Peter Jukes was an advocate for celibacy.

On 11 December 1998, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation age-related. After his resignation, he took over a parish of the Diocese Abderdeen in Scotland.
