John Maubray

John Maubray (* 1700, † October 17, 1732 ) was a Scottish physician who practiced in London and one of the early teachers of midwives and obstetricians. Because of his theories, he received the Beinmanen Sooterkin -Doctor.

Despite his short lifetime, he was only 32 years old, he was one of the prominent and influential physicians in contemporary London. With regard to obstetric he followed the early teachings of the Dutch obstetrician Hendrik van Deventer (1651-1724); in his work The Female Physician from 1724, he described that women ran under certain circumstances, impressions or risk of giving birth to mouse-like creatures. Maubray warned pregnant women before an all too familiar treatment with pets, which could cause the children see these pets similar. Maubray was one of the experts in the case of Mary Toft, who had allegedly born rabbits, which he saw as proof of his theories.
